Language, Literature and Culture in Anglophone CanadaCanada has come of age and July 1st, 2017, it celebrated its 150th birthday. Canada has a lot to offer and naturally these are not the familiar clichés of a country peopled by ice hockey players and loggers in their Mackinaw jackets or of a travel country, promising adventure and nature in a vast and seemingly endless landscape. No doubt, in many parts of Canada, people often experience long and cold winters and much of the country’s huge landmass to the North is covered by permafrost. As a matter of fact, most Canadians have never been up North and their perception of a cold and uninhabitable part of their country in many ways resembles the idea that students of English as a second language around the world seem to have. When Canada is a topic in the classroom, students will soon discover that, today, Canada is not a synonym for a "rural area" with isolated settlements and remote farms anymore; it rather also means industrialization and urbanization and a thriving metropolitan life. Moreover, many people consider the country’s concept of a culturally diverse society as one of its trademarks and a positive example of a how to live in a multicultural community. This website is mainly designed as a research tool for teachers of English and French, but also offers various sources of information for geography and history teachers and anyone interested in Canada.
- Bibliography An increasing number of publications has become available since the 1980s, but, in particular, in the new millenium and since the German lands of Hessen (2010), Schleswig Holstein (2013), Hamburg (2016) and Bremen (2018) chose Canada as the country of reference for their final exams in English as a second language.
